JEWISH SPAIN: AN EXPLORATION
April 16 – 25, 2018
With Rabbis Leila Berner and Toba Spitzer
At the intersection of three great faiths, Spain is a fascinating study of Jewish, Christian and Muslim cultures coming together to create an amazing fourth culture. We will be exploring the development of Sefardic culture, the interchange between the faiths, the evolution of southern Europe that eventually contributed to the scientific, architectural and cultural ways of the North as well and discover the intriguing ways in which Jewish Spain helped give rise to a vibrant Mediterranean culture during the 13 centuries during which Jews lived in the Iberian peninsula. During these centuries, Judeo-Español and Ladino languages, music and poetry flourished, communal structures were established that still influence town life in Spain, and there many Spaniards today who still believe that the “soul” of Spain is a symbiotic union of the three great faiths. Come explore with us! You will discover more than you ever imagined. See full itinerary at the link below.
The trip will feature the insights and scholarship of Rabbi Leila Berner, a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and a scholar of medieval Spanish Jewry. A Fulbright scholar, Dr. Berner’s area of greatest expertise is the Jews of Catalonia, in northeastern Spain. Dr. Berner often teaches about the cultural interchange between Jews, Muslims and Christians in medieval Spain and the lessons we can learn from this interchange for our own time.
This trip is geared to adults and older teens. The estimated cost is $2499 for the land portion of the tour (double occupancy; there are a limited number of singles available for an additional cost), and an additional $1000 for travel (includes Boston-Spain and a flight within the country). We need a minimum of 20 people for the trip to be a “go.” If there are less than 25 people, the price will be slightly higher; if we get more than 28 people, it will be slightly lower. There will also be some additional costs not quoted here (including meals not covered in the itinerary, travel insurance, and tips for local guides and drivers).
